This area of Texas, comprising Val Verde, Kinney and Edwards Counties, long known for the fantastic hunting, crystal blue skies, clean air and wonderful climate, attracted Spanish explorers as early as 1635 who used the San Felipe Springs, located just a few miles east of Del Rio, as a major stopping place in their exploration of the area. The commercial development of the 90,000 gallons per day spring in the late 1860s is what actually gave San Felipe del Rio its start as a community.

Located at the southwest corner the Edwards Plateau, the area has a mild climate. Winter temperatures occasionally dipping into the low 30s, summer ranging from the low 70s to 90s. Annual precipitation is around 18-20”.
Del Rio, with 44,000 of the 55,000 people in the county, is a thriving city just across the international border from the historic city of Ciudad Acuna, Mexico and just a heartbeat away from numerous recreational areas and sites such as Lake Amistad, the Devil’s River, Kickapoo Cavern and Seminole Canyon. The city has a International Airport, is served by AMTRAC, Greyhound/Trailways and Kerrville Bus companies and is also the intersection of highways 277/377 and highway 90 which goes from San Antonio to El Paso. The area is also home of the oldest continuously operating winery in the state of Texas.

The educational opportunities in Del Rio are excellent with not only a great public school system but a number of private schools. SouthWest Texas Junior College, Rio Grande College Del Rio and Park University all have campuses in the area. The Whitehead Memorial Museum in Del Rio is also an excellent place to learn about the rich and exciting history of the town and the area.
The medical needs of the county are extremely well met by Val Verde Regional Medical Center, a full service medical facility that was selected as ‘Best Public Provider in the state in 1989.
Employment in the area is strong and primarily supported by Laughlin Air Force Base, the busiest pilot training base in the U.S. Air Force, the soon to be opened FBI’s Regional Headquarters office and the Val Verde Correctional Facility which contracts to house offenders of the U.S. Customs & Border Protection and the U.S. Marshal Service.
